What Are Personality Disorders?
Personality is how we interact with the world, our thoughts, our views, and how we relate to the people and situations around us. People living with a personality disorder often experience and respond to everyday life differently, and areas many take for granted, like relationships, work, or goals, can feel difficult. Often a person does not realize their responses fall outside the usual range.
We all have personality traits that make us who we are, whether extroverted or introverted, confident or reserved. It is the extreme expression of certain traits that can begin to cause real difficulty.
How Personality Disorders Affect Daily Life
Personality disorders can point to deeper difficulties that shape how a person acts, feels, thinks, and perceives the world. Many people find it hard to trust others, which can put real strain on relationships and daily life. With treatment and the support of friends and family, people do get better over time, and some improve as they get older.
Categories of Personality Disorders
There are several personality disorders. A few of the more commonly recognized include:
How Windmill Treats Personality Disorders Alongside Substance Use
At Windmill Wellness Ranch, we treat adults 18 and older who are living with a personality disorder that occurs alongside substance use or addiction, known as a co-occurring disorder or dual diagnosis. Many people use alcohol, drugs, or medications to cope, and when substance use is added on top of a personality disorder, each one can make the other harder to manage.
Treatment mostly involves psychotherapy, in both group and individual settings, and there is no single medication for a personality disorder, so any medication is chosen to help with the specific symptoms a person is experiencing. In our inpatient program we diagnose and treat both the personality disorder and the substance use together, matching the right therapy and, when appropriate, medication management to each. Reach out, help is waiting.
People Get Better With Support
With treatment and the support of the people around them, individuals living with a personality disorder can build healthier relationships and a more stable, hopeful daily life.
A Full Continuum of Care
Windmill Wellness Ranch provides the full continuum of care in one place, so clients can progress from detox if needed, to residential treatment, into transitional living, sober living, intensive outpatient therapy, and ongoing aftercare support, all without being transferred to another facility along the way.
Throughout every level of care, the mental health side of treatment is guided by our master’s-trained clinicians, who provide the therapy and dual-diagnosis support that helps the whole person heal, not just the addiction.
