Research points to two things:
Residential care matters, and staying long enough matters.

Windmill is built around both.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse has found that longer time in treatment is linked to better outcomes. Windmill is designed around that reality: residential care is generally a minimum of eight weeks, with discharge based on clinical progress, not a fixed calendar date. Before discharge, we connect each client with an outpatient therapist so they have support in place as they continue their recovery.

These numbers exist because thousands of real people came here, stayed long enough, and did the work. The research shows what makes that more likely. The data shows what happens when it does.

We track whether treatment is working, not just whether someone completed a stay.

Windmill was selected to present its measurement-based care model at a national Joint Commission conference.

Joint Commission accreditation means meeting rigorous national standards for patient safety and quality. Being selected to present at their national conference reflects how seriously Windmill takes using data and technology to make treatment more effective.

Windmill may be the right fit if treatment needs to go deeper.

Many people who reach out are calling for someone they love. Others are calling for themselves. Either way, these are signs that residential treatment may be appropriate.

Windmill may be the right fit if…
  • Attempts to stop have not held.
  • Substance use and depression, anxiety, or trauma feel connected.
  • The current environment makes it hard to get better.
  • Outpatient therapy has not been enough.
  • A hospitalization, overdose, arrest, or frightening conversation made it clear something has to change.
  • Detox helped stabilize things, but the deeper issues were never fully addressed.
  • Military, first responder, or high-stress work history needs to be understood in treatment.

If several of these feel familiar, the next step is not figuring it out alone. It is having a real conversation with someone who understands what level of care may be needed.

After a few weeks, some people feel better and want to return home early. But feeling better is not the same as being ready.

Stages of Care
Stabilization
Rest, regular meals, and a structured environment can create real improvement in the first few weeks. But early stability is only the beginning.
Building trust
Would you open up about your deepest issues the first time you met a therapist? Most people do not. Trust takes time, and that trust is what makes deeper work possible.
Completing the treatment plan
By the end of their stay, clients have had time to complete their treatment plan, gradually take on more freedom, and prepare for the responsibilities and pressures of life after treatment.
How to think about it
Early progress: “I feel so much better”
Feeling better is real progress, but it can also create pressure to leave before the deeper work is done and the person is ready for life after treatment.
After stabilization
Once the crisis has settled, the most important work often begins. This is when clients can start addressing the patterns, pain, and habits that brought them into treatment.
Moving from treatment to recovery
As discharge approaches, we help clients prepare for life after Windmill by connecting them with the resources they need, such as a sponsor and an outpatient therapist.

What families ask before calling

What happens after discharge?+
Every client receives lifetime access to aftercare programming and a personal recovery coach after discharge. Treatment does not end when you leave the ranch.
How do I know if residential treatment is actually needed vs. outpatient therapy?+
The right level of care depends on the severity of substance use, the presence of mental health symptoms, the stability of the home environment, and prior treatment history. Our clinical team assesses this honestly. If someone can succeed in outpatient therapy, we will tell you.
My loved one has already been to treatment and relapsed. Does that mean treatment won’t work?+
Prior treatment experience is common among our clients. We review what’s been tried before and use that to inform the current plan. Prior attempts do not mean treatment will not work. They often mean the right type, depth, or duration of care has not been found.
Do you take insurance?+
We accept most major PPO insurance plans including Aetna, Cigna, TRICARE, and others, as well as self-pay. Our admissions team can verify your specific coverage confidentially, usually within a few hours.
Do You Treat Trauma / Mental Health / Dual Diagnosis?+
Yes, this is exactly what we’re built for. We focus on treating the root causes, like trauma and mental health, not just the symptoms, so you can experience real, lasting change. There is something or many things that got you feeling the way you are feeling now and we go after that. So you are aware our latest outcomes show that 3 out of 4 clients experience remission from PTSD symptoms after completing our program.”
